It’s no secret that divorce is on the rise not just in the United States, but all over the world. In decades past the concept of divorce used to be unheard of, but now a significant amount of marriages end in divorce in as little as ten years. If those types of statistics are surprising, you will likely be floored by information that was recently discovered about divorce statistics among those men and women who are serving or have served in the United States Armed Forces.
The following Infographic was complied from various sources to include detailed information about military divorce statistics. The Infographic contains information about all branches of the Armed Forces including the Army, Air Force, Navy and Marine Corps. The information contained in the Infographic was primarily based on data that is used internally by the military in order to distribute benefits.
There are currently an estimated 1.4 million men and women serving in the armed forces. Of that number, 1.2 million are male and a little over 202,000 are female. There are four main types of marital statuses that are present among these statistics including civilian marriages, which make up almost 50 percent. The remainder include joint service marriages, single with children and almost 40 percent of individuals who are single without children.
As of 2010, the divorce rate among civilians (those individuals who are not serving in the military) was 3.6 percent. If you thought that military members would be somehow exempt from those types of statistics, you’d be wrong. Research has put the military divorce rate in 2012 at essentially the same page as the civilian divorce rate at 3.5 percent. The divorce rate is also on the rise: in 2000, the enlisted divorce rate was only around 2.9 percent. By 2011, that number had risen to 4.1 percent.
